BRCC 2's are top of the crop after Illingworth win
As the saying goes, ‘Make hey while the sun shines’. Ben Rhydding 2’s certainly did on Saturday away at Illingworth. Whilst the rest of the league were affected by adverse weather, Ben Rhydding enjoyed 6 points on a beautiful day in Halifax.
Despite the favourable weather, the pitch had clearly been affected by rain so it was disappointing when skipper Andrew Brown lost the toss and Rhydding were forced to bat.
Nevertheless, Forrest Hamilton and Mark Booth applied themselves well in the early overs on a difficult pitch. They were making serene progress towards the drinks interval before Hamilton, on 37, played a rash shot and was caught at cover.
This wicket, as so often happens, brought a flurry of others as Olly Musgrave and Ian Grosset came and went in quick succession. Ben Thorp then helped stabilise the innings with 15 before he was caught at point.
Ben Rhydding then imploded again with two appalling run-outs. The dismissal of Booth (41) was particularly damaging as he had threatened to take the game away from Illingworth. Thankfully, debutant Sam Redford and the ever-reliable Andrew Brown managed to drag the total up to a respectable 163 with some lusty hitting.
Roam Hamilton and Daniel Shiels shared the new ball and straight away found the form which made them both such a force last season. Illingworth were restricted to less than a run an over before the impressive Roam Hamilton broke the deadlock with a deserved wicket.
Shiels, who was struggling with injury, finally found his length and proceeded to grab his first two wickets in one over. He got another shortly after and Illingworth were reduced to 20-4.
Sam Redford was brought on at first change and made an instant impact with a wicket from his first ball. Redford then proceeded to take two more wickets in a highly impressive first outing for Ben Rhydding, much will now be expected of the new recruit.
Despite a flurry of sixes from Illingworth’s captain, Rhydding were always in control. Roam Hamilton grabbed a thoroughly deserved 2nd wicket, with Ben Thorp claiming his first victim of the season. The elder Hamilton then rounded off the innings by bowling the last man.
It was a comprehensive victory, which skipper Andrew Brown was very happy with: “I thought it was a very good performance from everybody, everyone played their part. It was very professionally done.”
Ben Rhydding will now look ahead excitedly to their next game against Bardsey at home.

Henry Barrow Interview
BRCCTV caught up with Henry Barrow for the first time since making his switch from Addingham. He kindly took time out of a charity drinking and FIFA 12 function to speak to us. Our new all-rounder talks about why he chose Rhydding and how he feels him and his new team-mates can cope with the step up to Division A cricket.
BRCC 1's earn 2 points against Otley
Ben Rhydding’s first outing in the A Division saw them earn a valuable two-point draw against a formidable Otley side.
In wet conditions, Rhydding skipper Nick Smith won the toss and put the away side into bat in a match reduced to 34 overs apiece.
They started brightly, with new recruit Henry Barrow claiming his first Rhydding scalp when he had Sam Smith caught behind with the score at only 6.
However, partnerships would soon be found difficult to break as Barrow and fellow opener Jason Wright struggled to adapt to the conditions. Alex Miller came on and produced a tidy spell of spin bowling in which he claimed 3-26 from his 10 overs, putting his side in a good position as they reduced Otley to 85-6.
Stewart Smith proved to be the major thorn in Rhydding’s side, and his long knock of 36* proved vital. Dropped catches and lackadaisical fielding let Otley off the hook, who finished their innings at 145-7 after some late fireworks from overseas professional Andrew Ross.
Henry Barrow ended with 2-42, Nick Smith 1-31, and Jason Wright 0-43.
The home side’s reply got off to a disastrous start when Lewis Bolton lost his middle stump with the score on 5.
This brought together Smith and young Robbie Miller, elevated to opener this season in a revised batting order. The two of them put on 69 for the second wicket, and put their side into a position of strength at 74-2 before Smith was dismissed for 32.
Wright provided fireworks and momentum in the form of two monstrous sixes but was sent packing by George Ross who bowled him for 15.
Miller fell soon afterwards, and a flurry of hasty shot selection meant that Rhydding were soon reduced to 111-6. With the overs dwindling, they chose to bat out the innings to achieve their first two points of the campaign, finishing at 113-6.
Despite the hashed run chase, Alex Miller remained upbeat after the performance: “We’d have taken that. To get off the mark with two points in our first game is a great start. We should have won the game in truth, but all credit to the boys who worked hard today and proved that we can and will be very competitive at this level.”
The first team continue their quest for points on Saturday when they visit Bilton.
